JORHAT: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi was released from Jorhat Central Jail after a lower court granted him bail here on Monday.

Akhil was brought to Jorhat from Guwahati on Sunday in connection with a case registered against him at Titabor police station in February this year.

The Titabor sub-divisional judicial magistrate granted bail to the peasant leader on Monday afternoon. The bail petition was filed on Sunday and the court had fixed Monday for its hearing.

A case was registered against Akhil for rioting and restricting a public servant from carrying out his duty at Titabor on February 3. Titabor police submitted the case diary before the court. Police imposed Sections 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to any person being a public servant in the discharge of his duty) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of IPC against Akhil at the time of filing the case diary. But, the court rejected the prayer of police and released the peasant leader on bail.

Coming out of the jail, Akhil vehemently criticized chief minister Tarun Gogoi and also the Congress governments at the Centre and in the state. “The governments at the Centre and in the state are only working for to appease the corporate groups and not for the common people in the country. So, we must oust them from power to save the nation,” he said.

Akhil said people should join hands to throw Congress out of power. Hundreds of KMSS activists took to the streets at the Jorhat town in noon to protest against the government’s conspiracy to keep their leader Akhil behind the bars.

It is great news that leader of the leading organization of Assam Krishak
Mukti Sangram Samiti Akhil Gogoi has been released on bail after a
fortnight since he was illegally put behind bars by the Assam govt. KMSS
demanded Forest rights title to all forest dwellers in the city of
Gawahati, whereas the cong Govt wanted to wash off its hand by just giving
500 titles to selected people. It was strongly resisted by the organization
and in the movement one protester self immolated himself also. He passed
away later on. Rather than seriously considering the implementation of
Forest Right Act in the State the Assam Govt resorted to further repression
and arrest of the leading activist. There was a wide range protest all over
in Assam against the arrest of Akhil Gogoi. It is to be specially mentioned
here that the Assam Cong govt is afraid of the spread of the movement in
the state and hence has resorted to the mass scale violence.

The manifesto of the Cong Party for General Election 2014 does not mention
anything on the implementation of FRA, rather it only uses forest dwellers
as reference point saying that they will be involved more in the forest
management. It is very clear from the manifesto that Cong govt wants to
dole out the vital natural resources to the corporates by propagating PPP
(Private People Partnership) thus completely cheating the people of India.
The present ruling govt is Assam has also no commitment to implement such
special Act hence the conflict is brewing in the state since long. It is to
be watched now how the main stream parties are loosing their relevance. The
struggle for asserting people’s rights over natural resources in Assam will
continue.

All social movements extend their solidarity to the movement of KMSS Assam.
