political rivalry blamed for violence in Patragada village
STATESMAN NEWS SERVICE
Kendrapara, 20 August
In the latest outbreak of political violence in Mahakalpada assembly
constituency, around 12 houses were set on fire in predominantly
Dalits-inhabited Patragada village here.
The incident occurred yesterday night when a group of unidentified
miscreants allegedly set ablaze the thatched houses.
Tension has mounted up in the village and neighbouring areas even as
police are keeping close watch on the situation. Mahakalpada police
station Inspector, Mr. Padarabinda Tripathy said “it appears to be
fallout of political rivalry between two factions of ruling BJD and
opposition BJP as per preliminary investigation done so far. No arrest
has been made in this connection as investigation is underway to
identify the culprits”. A case under IPC section-436 (mischief by
fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house) and other
penal provisions has been registered in this connection, police added.
The ruling BJD in the area is divided into two camps while the BJP has
a strong presence since its leader Bijay Mahapatra had contested and
lost the assembly seat.
The BJD MP of the area and a Minister allegedly do not see eye to eye
and their supporters often resort to untoward incidents.
