The Shiv Sena corporator Sheetal Mhatre told India Today TV that it is an old matter and the administration has been discussing it for years now.

Sheetal Mhatre said that there is a need for resolution.

“We have no issues with mannequins placed inside the shops legally. But if there is display on trees or on the walls or some one carries them out on the streets then that is illegal. We have demanded action against those who indulge in such acts. At first, a warning would be served and if they don’t heed then strict action will be taken in the form of cancellation of licence,” Sheetal Mhatre said.

The report received severe criticism on social media and otherwise.

Does BMC consider lingerie something dirty and to be hidden away? Misplaced priorities when the city is suffering from complete breakdown of infrastructure. Downright silly of BMC. But now with this mandate for the hillbillies we can expect more such moronic decisions97:36 PM – Jun 18, 2019T

Lawyer and women activist Abha Singh isn’t in agreement with this thought process.

“Display of lingerie in the shops is done purely for promotional and commercial considerations. The intention is not to promote eroticism. Therefore, this will not get covered under the Indecent Representation of Women’s (Prohibition) Act. Hence, the demand of the Shiv Sena is regressive in nature and cannot be accepted,” activist Abha Singh said.

“As a civic administration the BMC doesn’t have the necessary powers to take action under Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act. The BMC, however, can fine such shopkeepers. A direction from the state government would be sought on the same,” a person in the know how of these developments said.

Yuva Sena is supporting the order.

“I would welcome this move by our law committee and Sheetal Mhatre ji about illegal mannequins. As a youth we are a part of the progressive mind frame but yet we move around with our family, sisters and female friends. Mannequins hanging around trees and kept along the roads are embarrassing. Mannequins are supposed to be inside four walls of shopping areas. In a society, we should respect something which is private and needs a sense of responsibility when it comes for marketing skills in the right way. I thank our dynamic councillor for executing this… through due process of law,” core committee member of the Yuva Sena Rahul Kanal sai
