The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a case in connection with the gangrape and murder of a 25-year-old woman in Cuttack district.

The NHRC decision came after Supreme Court counsel and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy moved the apex human rights watchdog requesting it to take immediate action on the ghastly incident.

The body of the victim, that bore multiple injuries on the face and chest, was recovered from a canal near Haripur Bazar under the Kishornagar police station.

The circumstantial evidence pointed to the involvement of more than one perpetrator in the incident, the complainant stated.

The woman’s bicycle was found lying behind a bush. Police then fished out the woman’s clothes from the nearby canal. The NHRC also registered another case filed by the petitioner on the issue of over 100 students of Gopinathpur UGME School in Puri district falling ill after consuming iron tablets.
