CUTTACK: A PIL was filed in the Orissa high court seeking inquiry into the rape and murder of a minor blind girl in Puri in June. Recently, the National Commission for Women (NCW) slammed the state government for ‘ lackadaisical’ approach towards the probe.

The PIL filed recently by a social worker Shashiprava Bindhani alleged that the local police station had conducted a shoddy probe into the case and urged the court to order re-investigation by an independent body. She contended that as per the Supreme Court guidelines, an expert woman police officer under supervision of an ACP-ranked officer should probe a rape case.

A 14-year-old blind girl was brutally raped and murdered at Beldala village, on the outskirts of Puri, on June 6. Her body was recovered from a casuarina forest near the village and a taxi driver arrested for the heinous crime.
