The Madras High Court has directed the inspector attached to the All Women Police Station in Madipakkam to enquire into a complaint from Selvi, a dalit, working as a class IV  staff in Quaid-e-Milleth College for Men in Medavakkam, alleging sexual harassment by the principal and office superintendent.

“The respondent shall enquire into the matter and if there is any cognizable offence, further action shall be taken in accordance with law. In the event of registration of a case, it shall be investigated by a competent police officer,’’ Justice P Devadass said, while disposing of a criminal original petition from Selvi, on Monday.

According to advocate A Sirajuddin, the Madipakkam inspector did not register an FIR on Selvi’s complaint dated September 6 last. Even though the complaint disclosed commission of an offence under Sec 3(1)(x) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Sec 354 of the TN Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act,, no FIR was registered by the inspector. On the other hand, the inspector, colluding with the principal, was attempting to close the case, the petitioner added.
