A 19-year-old resident of Punjab has told Jharkhand police she was gangraped by two men in an empty bogie of a Delhi-Ranchi train two weeks ago , an official said.

Two days after the rape, the woman allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison but was rescued and rushed to Ranchi’s Guru Nanak Hospital, where her condition is said to be stable.

She told police about the rape when they went to the hospital to record her statement on Friday.

The resident of Fazilka town in Punjab said she was gangraped by two men on Anand Vihar (New Delhi)-Ranchi Swarna Jayanti Express on February 6 between Muri junction and Ranchi.

After the alleged crime, the two men pulled the chain to stop the train in a deserted place and escaped in the bushes.

“The girl has said that there was nobody in the bogie. Ideally, a security personnel should have been there. We will have to check with the concerned RPF official,” superintendent of railway police Sangeeta Kumari said.

Kumari said the medical test of the woman has been done and the reports are awaited. The clothes she was wearing have also been sent for forensic tests.

An FIR was lodged with Ranchi’s GRP police station on Friday night.

Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das on Saturday said the government will provide all possible medical help to the girl, and ensure the arrest of the accused.
