Rajasthan police on Sunday registered an FIR against six cops, including the suspended SHO of Sardarshahar police station in Churu district, for alleged gangrape and wrongful confinement of a 35-year-old Dalit woman. The woman had alleged that while the cops tortured her brother-in-law to death on July 6, they gangraped her after picking them up in an alleged theft case. A judicial inquiry has been ordered into the alleged custodial killing.
The FIR in the gangrape case was registered after the woman recorded her statement before the CID-CB on Saturday from her bed in the trauma ward of a city hospital. In her statement, she alleged that persistent custodial beatings — leading to severe injuries on her eyes, arms and neck — and gangrape by the cops inside the police station.
Churu additional SP Prakash Kumar told TOI that the FIR has been filed under IPC sections 376D (gangrape), 376-2A (police officer committing rape), 323 (causing hurt) and 343 (wrongful confinement), and under relevant sections of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. “She has named former Sardarshahar SHO Ranveer Singh and said that five to six other cops, who she could not identify, had also raped her,” a police officer said, adding that investigation into the case has been handed over to CID-CB.
According to the woman’s statement, police had picked up her brother-in-law on June 30. On July 3, cops came to her house and detained her, saying that her brother-in-law had given the stolen booty to her.
She claimed that she saw her brother-in-law being beaten to death in the police station on July 6. Thereafter, the cops violated her. On July 10, some policemen dropped her home after threatening her of consequences if she revealed anything.
Police, however, said that the youth was picked up only on July 6 and not on June 30. “There was a case of theft registered against him in December 2018. A final report (FR) was filed on the ground that he was untraceable,” a senior police officer said.
“On July 3, villagers found the accused and began thrashing him. We rescued him from the mob and sent him to his house. He was arrested only on July 6. But when he complained of health complications, he was taken to a hospital where he died of cardiac arrest, as mentioned in the postmortem report,” the officer said.
SHO Singh and the other cops of Sardarshahar police station were suspended on July 8.
Churu SP Rajendra Kumar was removed while DSP Bhanwar Lal was suspended and put under a vigilance investigation on Friday.
