Meerut: Family members of a woman who was allegedly thrashed and gang-raped in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh have accused the local police of inaction. The complainant’s parents claim that local law enforcement officers not just refused to add sections of rape in the FIR but also demanded a bribe.

The matter first came to light in October of this year when a team of police personnel found a woman in a severely injured condition while patrolling the streets. At the time she was found, the woman could not speak because of damage to her vocal cords. She somehow managed to lead the local police to her father who lodged an initial complaint in this regard.

In his complaint, the father accused the woman’s husband of conspiring with her former husband and three of his accomplices who mercilessly thrashed her before allegedly gang-raping her and leaving her for dead. Identified as the prime accused in the case, the survivor’s husband offered to take her for a ride around town which is when he and the others took her to an isolated spot where they assaulted and later took turns raping her.

Going by the most recent inputs, the woman is currently being treated at a local hospital and approached the police after her condition got better. She was able to tell counsellors that she was not only beaten but also raped by the accused. Since she could not speak at the time owing to deep injuries on her neck, the police refused to add the section of rape to the FIR. It was only when family members apprised senior police officials of the matter that Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was added to the FIR apart from the sections corresponding to charges of attempt to murder and cruelty by the husband.

Furthermore, the parents have maintained that police officials in-charge of the case demanded a statement from the mute survivor and a bribe from the family. “They said that our daughter should have died and built a weak case against the accused. They have still not arrested the three other accomplices who committed the crime,” said the survivor’s father. Meanwhile, the woman is still being treated for severe wounds on both her hands and her neck. One of her arms has stopped functioning since the assault.
