Vedanta Stops Operations After Accident

The Zambian unit of London-listed Vedanta Resources (VED.LN) has stopped copper production at one of its main pits, after a miner died in an accident, the company said Tuesday.

The miner was hit by an underground drilling machine on Monday night, Shapi Shachinda, the spokesman for the unit, Konkola Copper Mines, said.

This is the second accident to hit production at KCM in less than two months, as the mining company grapples with dwindling output amid low global metal prices.

Operations at the scene of the accident have been suspended to pave the way for investigations carried out internally and by the Mine Safety Department. The next of kin have been informed about the fatality, Mr. Shachinda said.
